India, Japan widen defence, security cooperation; on same page over terror from Pakistan

India and Japan today decided to upgrade their defence and security cooperation, and deepen the involvement of Japan in developmental project in the sensitive North-east region besides agreeing to work together with third countries.The two countries also signed 15 key agreements, including in key sectors like civil aviation, after bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his visiting Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe at their fourth annual Summit here.In a joint statement issued after the talks, both the countries also called for "zero-tolerance approach" to terrorism and in obvious reference to Pakistan called for destruction of safe havens for terrorists and their financing channels.They called upon Pakistan to bring to book the perpetrators of the Pathankot terror strike.Without naming Pakistan and China, the joint statement said the two countries agreed on the need of world community holding accountable all those parties that helped North Korea in its nuclear programme."There was complete meeting of minds between the two countries on the issue of North Kora,'' Foreign Secretary Dr S Jaishankar said here briefing mediapersons about the joint statement and about the meeting between Prime Ministers Modi and Abe.Dr Jaishankar said the defence cooperation between India and Japan had so far been confined to maritime domain (Malabar Exercise), but today they agreed to explore cooperation in Air Force, Military and Coast guard.There were discussions on cooperation in defence equipment and technology, in addition to the on going ''serious'' discussion on U2 amphibius aircraft, the Foreign Secretary said.He said connectivity was a very important component of today's discussions, and the two countries agreed to set up an India-Japan Act East forum through which there would be greater involvement of India and Japan in the infrastructure development in the border states of India in the North-east.More UNI DEVN NAZ SNU 1640
