Founder of the Isha Yoga Centre, Sadugur Jaggi Vasudev today stressed for a proper legislation to link rivers in the country. In an informal chat with newspersons, Sadguru who is here along with his vehicle rally from Kanyakumari to Himalayas under the 'Save the Rivers" campaign said that the central and state governments should unitedly function for the linking of rivers. He said 'courts could not provide water and could decide how to share the available water'. Our aim is that there should be water in the rivers, he added and said it is the duty of the government to take a decision on sharing of water and the court will settle in case of any dispute. Later speaking at the function organized at the beach, he said that rivers being a concurrent subject, the central government could not get the concurrence of the state governments and this is the most import issue in the country now. He had taken up the issue and for the first time 16 Chief Ministers had given their concurrence in the issue. Stating that this is not a programme to win elections, he said that if at all implemented it will take another 15 years for the completion of the project. Then it will take another five to ten years for a 10 to 15 percent water rise in rivers. Many of us will not be alive to see the result, he said, adding that who is going to take a political risk for a project which will take at least 20 years to show the result. Sadguru also urged Chief Minister V Narayanasamy to ensure that Puducherry be a model to other states. He said one thousand year old agricultural technology is still being used in the country. Many developed countries are producing several folds of yield with the water we are using for one crop, he said and added that Puducherry is having good relations with France where most modern agricultural technology is available. Hence, the Chief Minister should take steps to avail the technologies here, he said. Mr Narayanasmay, his Cabinet Colleagues Namasivayam and Kandasamy and others addressed the gathering.UNI PAB CS1541
