All surface links between Kolkata and northeastern states of the country remained cut off for straight second day today with Indian Railways' tracks and highways went under knee-to-waist deep waters beyond Malda station forcing the authorities to cancel all the routed scheduled trains for indefinite period, official sources said. Even many long distance trains that left here yesterday for NJP and beyond to Assam and other northern states have been rerouted and called back to Sealdah and Howrah stations. NF Railway CPRO Pranob Jyoti Sharma today said they had no other option but to wait and watch because reports said in many areas the lines appeared cracked and soils underneath the tracks washed away, even in junction areas like Kishangunj, Cooch Behar and many parts of north Bengal. Pounding rains killed at least 7 people in Darjeeling (2) and districts of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar (5) on Saturday with some 300,000 affected, of them 200,000 rendered homeless and taken shelter in makeshift camps with threats continuous looming large by rain fed swelling rivers in most of north Bengal's six districts. Some 300,000 people from four districts of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Darjeeling have been affected.UNI XC-PC AKM
