Thespian Shobha Sen, widow of Utpal Dutt, dies at 93

Thespian Shobha Sen, widow of Utpal Dutt, died here today at her Moor Avenue residence in south Kolkata, family sources said. She died due to old age at 93 and is survived by her daughter Bishnupriya Dutt. Former Bengali theatre and film actress Shobha Sen was born in undivided Bengal at Faridpur district, now Bangladesh, in 1923, and was educated at Bethune College in then Calcutta before making her career in theatre and films. Awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi for theatre and acting, Shobha Sen made her marks in stage along with her spouse Utpal Dutt in Tiner Tolowar, Nabanna, Barricade and Titumir among others, She first entered in to Bengali film Bhagwan Sree Krishna directed by Prafulla Chakraborty in 1955 and unfinished movie of Ritwik Ghatak's Bedeni. She also acted in Mrinal Sen's directed films of Ek Adhuri Kahani, Ekdin Protidin and Utpal Dutt's Baishaki Megh and Jhar. The thespian also acted in Basu Bhattacharjee and Gautam Ghosh's flims. She was also honoured with Mother Teresa award in 2010. UNI PC AKM
