Stolen Panchaloha idol seized, youth held

Police today arrested a 26-year-old person and recovered a centuries-old stolen Panachaloha idol of Goddess Mariamman from him, here.

Police said the 1.6-foot-tall Panchaloha idol of Goddess Mariamman was stolen by an unidentified gang from the famous Arulmigu Muthumariamman temple at Thuraiyur village in the district on January 21, 2017.

Based on a complaint from the temple authorities, Sethubavachatram police registered a case and were conducting investigation.

Meanwhile, a special team after a detailed investigation arrested G Ramesh, a resident of Fathima Nagar and recovered the stolen idol from his house. Police are also on the lookout for two more accused who are absconding in connection with the case.

The value of the idol is estimated to be over Rs 50-lakh. UNI GSM SHS SNU 2257
