Clarifying over media reports that the government has asked all banks to enable all accounts with net banking before March 31, 2017, Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Aruna Sundarajan today said it's not with the net banking but mobile banking and that too if the customers are willing to. Talking to reporters after a panel discussion on SheMeansBusiness event which was organised by Facebook, Mrs Sundarajan said, "What we have asked the banks to do is to enable all the customers who have mobiles for mobile banking. Earlier, the mobile banking was not such a priority and therefore many customers have not said I want mobile banking service but today they want. So, we are asking the banks to run a nationwide campaign upto March 31 to ensure that every customer who has mobile is enabled for mobile banking. This is the part of digital payment drive of the company."On being asked about the nature of adoption of the service, she said it is not forceful, whoever wants can avail it.The secretary further added those customers who are using Unified Platform Interface (UPI) and BHIM app, will automatically enabled with mobile banking. On February 15, the government (Allocation of Business) rules were amended through a notification entrusting the IT ministry to promote digital payments. Earlier, the government had also set up a panel under the Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant to push adoption of online transactions in the backdrop of demonetisation. UNI ASH SDR ADG 1503
