Terming rice as the 'engine of food security, International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Director General Dr Mathew Morell today said it has developed 'Climate Change Ready Varieties' of rice that could face adverse conditions of stress such as salinity, drought, flooding and heat, and help provide additional resilience to the farmers. Delivering the Millennium Lecture at M S Swaminathan Research Foundation here, he stressed on the importance of rice for consumption and for farmers. ''The climate-ready varieties could face adverse conditions of stress such as salinity, drought, flooding and heat'', he added. He said IRRI, headquartered in Los Baos, Philippines, has over 127,000 accessions of wild rice in its gene bank, but only five per cent of them have been used for breeding. Referring to rice as the 'engine of food security', he said it feeds four billion people and supports over 144 million farm families across the world and would continue to be important in the future as well.MORE UNI GV 1818
