The Anti-Idol smuggling wing of the Tamil Nadu police has seized 11 ancient idols worth Rs.50 crore from a house at Colas Nagar here and arrested a person in connection with the crime. A team of the special wing led by Inspector General Pon Manickavel along with Puducherry police conducted the raid last night and seized the idols. Since it was night time, the idols were kept in the house itself with security and taken away this morning.

According to Mr.Manickavel, one Dheenadayalan of Alwarpet, Chennai was arrested for smuggling ancient idols and more than 400 idols were seized from his house. On interrogation, he revealed that one Pushparajan of Puducherry was supplying idols to him. Following this, Pushparajan was also arrested and on his confession, police conducted the raid last night and arrested Ranjith Kumar, the manager of Pushparajan.

He said the idols recovered here seems to be those from a temple near Melppadi in Tamil Nadu constructed by Raja Raja Chozhan. An idol missing complaint was there for the past 20 years, Mr Manickavel added.UNI PAB CS
