A group of farmers have threatened to disrupt tourist arrival to the city on the Vijayadashami (October 11) by blocking the Mysuru-Bengaluru highway in protest against release of water from the Cauvery river. Farmers have stated that hundreds of villagers will bring bullock carts along with them and block the highway at a couple of places disrupting the vehicle movement towards Mysuru. Interacting with mediapersons here, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha leader Borapura Shankaregowda said that protests will begin early in the morning on October 11. "We have no choice but to block the road as the State government is more bothered about releasing water to Tamil Nadu than worrying about standing crops and drinking water needs of people across the Cauvery basin and Bengaluru", Mr Shankaregowda said. "On Vijayadashami day, we will be supported by farmers along the basin at Srirangapatna and we will ensure that traffic flow comes to a standstill," he added. Police are on high alert with Section 144 in place. Farmers staged an overnight 'dharna' demanding stopping of Cauvery water release at KRS continued. Farmers today took out a padayatra from the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam to Srirangapatna. Deputy Commissioner S Ziyaullah has extended prohibitory orders clamped on October 1 - across Mandya, Malavalli, Maddur, Srirangapatna and Pandavapura taluks till October 6. Mr S Ziyaullah also extended the ban on entry of tourists to the KRS and the historical Brindavan Gardens in its downstream till October 7. In view of Cauvery water crisis, the district administration has cancelled the historical annual Srirangapatna Dasara festival, which was scheduled to be held at Srirangapatna on October 5 and 6. The police department has tightened the security measures in the vicinity of KRS following the protest.UNI BSP MSP TS SDR 1830
