In a major haul, the Idol Wing of the Tamil Nadu police, today seized more than 30 ancient idols from a house at Alwarpet area in the city and arrested three people in this connection. Police sources said that acting on specific inputs that ancient idols were being packed to be transported to Mumbai and to foreign countries from there, a team of Idol Wing Police officials led by Inspector General A G Pon Manickavel, raided the house and seized 34 idols, which were stolen from various temples in the State. The idols, made of stone and iron, were more than 100 years old. The value of the seized idols were estimated to be worth several crores of rupees. The idols were being packed in cardboard boxes using haystack, when the officials raided the house and effected the seizure. Three people--Mansingh, Kumar and Rajamani--who were said to be manning the security of the house and were found packing the idols, were arrested. The owner of the House Deenadayalan, who was wanted in earlier idol smuggling cases, was absconding. The Idol Wing police were interrogating the trio to ascertain the whereabouts of the house owner and the details of temples from where the idols were stolen. The police were also probing whether today's seizure has any links with the earlier seizure of idols, during which 12 people were arrested a couple of months back.UNI GV 1150
