The 130-year-old British period meter gauge rail track from Lucknow to Mailaini via Sitapur would be history in next two months when the railways would start gauge conversion from May 1.After a delay of around three years, the North-Eastern railways would commence the first phase of the gauge conversion between Aishbagh (Lucknow) to Sitapur from May of about 90 kilometers which will be completed by December next. Plying of around 26 pairs of trains would be suspended due to the conversion and 130 years old trains British period trains like Nainital Express, Century Express, Rohilkhand Express would now be a history. However, the coaches and engine of these trains would be conserved at the railway museum.North- Eastern Railway general manager Rajiv Mishra recently told mediapersons here that the conversion of the Lucknow-Sitapur section would start from May 1 and is expected to be completed by December end.He said already, the platforms of Lucknow City and Daliganj stations in the state capital are being modernised for broad gauge trains."The conversion project from Lucknow to Mailani is around Rs 1000 crores, of which railways have sanctioned Rs 350 crores for the first phase," the NE GM said. The second phase of the conversion between Sitapur to Mailani would be taken up later. The Lucknow- Mailani meter gauge section was inaugurated on November 15,1886 by the then British government.Officials said that railways are also bringing out a heritage magazine on the Lucknow- Mailani meter gauge section with giving impetus to his British time coaches, engines and tracks. The magazine will also carry rare photographs of the trains and stations during the British period. The project of conversion of the Lucknow-Mailani railway section has been delayed for nearly three years after, the then Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Choudhury of the previous UPA government at the Centre laid the foundation stone for conversion of Lucknow-Mailani meter gauge to broad gauge on February 2,2013 in Sitapur.UNI MB SB 1200
