Two former Union Ministers, a formerBihar minister and an intellectual have petitioned PrimeMinister Narendra Modi to confer the status of 'RashtriyaSwabhiman Divas' on May 9, the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap. Former Union Ministers Sanjay Paswan, Nagmani, formerBihar minister Akhlaque Ahmad and journalist-author RanjanKumar Singh have written to the Prime Minister that whenvalues are being debated all round, the need of the hour wasto associate society and nation with self-respect. Although May 9 is celebrated across the country as thebirth anniversary of Maharana Praatap, it has not yet beengranted the status of 'National Self-respect Day', they regretted. 'There are many examples of truth, non-violence andsacrifice in the history of India. But Maharana Pratap isthe sole representative of self-respect. People of allcastes and communities are equally proud of Maharana Pratapand his role in Indian history', they argued. They contended that the battle of Haldighati was not abattle between Hindus and Muslims, rather it was a struggleof the oppressed and free-thinking inner self. 'Pratap'sarmy had Bhil tribals representing dalits and Hakim Khanrepresenting Muslims, while Bhama Shah, who provided help toPratap, represented the Vaishya community', they claimed.UNI ACJ AKM ASH RJ AN2103
