A Keralite teacher and cultural activist, who had been in a jail at Maldives during the past eight months, will be released soon.
A decision in this regard was taken by the Maldives Government following the intervention of Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, BJP State President V Muralidharan said in a statement here today.
A communication from the Union External Affairs Minister's office to Mr Muralidharan informed that the Maldives Government had decided to release the Malayalee teacher Jayachandran Mokeri, who had been in the jail following a false case against him by the school management, he said.
He was jailed by the officials based on a complaint that Mr Jayachandran warned a student, who was a nuisance in the school. However, the head master in the school, who allegedly had enmity with Mr Jayachandran, filed a false complaint against him on which the Maldives Government registered a case and put him in jail, he said.
Though the parents of the student had withdrawn the complaint against the teacher, the officials were not ready to withdraw the same and were in the process by a certain section of people to add more charges against him in order not to release him from the jail.
However, following a pressure from Ms Swaraj, the Maldives Government decided to release him, he added in the statement.
