Tamil Nadu forest officials arrested six hunters for poaching Peacocks and Peahens at Chennamanaickenpatti village in this Southern district, early today.

Official sources said the gang was found hunting the national birds in a private farm land. On hearing the gun shot sound, the owner of the farmland along with locals overpowered the gang and handed over them to the Forest officials.

A country made gun, spot lights, knives, four carcasses of peacocks and a carcass of peahen were seized from the gang.

The gang confessed to poaching the birds with an intention to sell their meat to various hotels and regular customers. The national birds are protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and the poachers could be sentenced up to seven years imprisonment with a fine, the sources added.
