As India celebrates the birth month of Mahatma Gandhi, a staunch believer in Ahimsa (non-violence), a petition signed by 11,000 consumers calls for Drug Controller General G N Singh to ensure all cosmetics sold in India reflect this principle.
Humane Society International/India's Be Cruelty-Free petition was presented to Singh at his office in New Delhi. The petition urges introduction of a ban on the import and sale of animal-tested cosmetics, mirroring bans already in place across Europe and Israel.
Singh was instrumental in introducing India's ban on animal testing for cosmetics in June. This victory for animals was celebrated by HSI India's Be Cruelty-Free campaign. Yet India won't be truly cruelty-free so long as there are sales of cosmetics that have been newly animal-tested in other countries.
Alokparna Sengupta, HSI India's Be Cruelty-Free campaign manager, said, "Our government has, quite rightly, recognised that animal testing of cosmetics is morally unjustifiable. It is vital that we do not allow India's shops to become the dumping ground for cruel cosmetics animal- tested in other countries. It is every citizen's Constitutional right to practice compassion and Ahimsa towards living creatures, but we cannot uphold Ahimsa if cosmetics cruelty continues to be on sale in our shops. October marks the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, a leader of Ahimsa, so it is the perfect time for India to ban the import and sale of cruel cosmetics." HSI India is calling for an amendment in the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules to prohibit the import and sale of those cosmetic ingredients or final products which have been tested on animals. Be Cruelty-Free India is part of the largest campaign in the world to end cosmetics animal testing.
Globally, Humane Society International and its Be Cruelty-Free partners are leading the charge to end cosmetics animal testing in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Korea, New Zealand, Russia and beyond. Be Cruelty-Free USA is spearheaded by The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society Legislative Fund. UNI BM 2028 NNNN
