Security forces today claimed to have captured vast areas from the Maoists' control in Chhattisgarh by launching their first and biggest ever anti-naxal operation in the rebel bastion of Abujhmad forests.

Describing the two-week-long joint operation, involving a huge contingent of 3,000 security personnel, as "very successful", state Director General of Police Anil Navaney said, the security personnel which marched into Abujhmad forests from Bijapur, Narayanpur and Gadchiroli in Maharashtra, had at least ten fierce encounters with the ultras.

"As many as 13 Naxals have been captured and a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including a dozen guns and rifles, live cartridges, explosives, detonators, IEDs, computer systems, DVDs, CDs, drawing instuments, medicines and Naxal literatures have been seized," the DGP said. According to reports, two jawans were injured in an encounter in Narayanpur and the Naxals opened fire on the helicopter while shifting the victims to the district headquarters.

The security personnel drawn from CRPF, Chhattisgarh Special Task Force, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA) and District Force launched the joint massive anti-Naxal operation simultaneouly two weeks back and returned to their respective base camps safely yesterday, Mr Navaney said.

This was for the first time in the four-decade-old Naxal movement, the security forces entered the Naxal-controlled areas of Lalchawad, Pagdu, Bhatpal, Kohukameta, Chotedongar, Irukbhat, Toke, Donderaj, Mardapal, Jatawada and Kurusnar in the deep jungles of Abujhmad, which is considered as the safe heaven of the rebel outfit, the sources said.

Since the hilly and densly forested Abujhmad had remained under the control of the ultras over the years, no government agency had ever dared to undertake any survey in the area.

Claiming that the security personnel had made a survey in a 450 km area that they came across during the operation, the DGP said the survey and the successful opeation would be very useful for the security personnel to launch similar massive anti-Naxal opeation in the region in future.
