SIES to honour Somnath Chatterjee, Sreedharan and Annadurai

The South Indian Education Society (SIES) here will honour leading parliamentarian and former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and Delhi Metro Rail Chief R Sreedharan with 12th SIES Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati National Eminance awards on December 25.

Other recipients included Chandrayaan Director M Annamalai and Sanskrit scholar and Jnanpith award winner Satya Vrat Shastri.

The awards are annually presented to eminent personalities for their lifetime contribution in the fields of public leadership, community leadership, science and technology and Sanskrit promotion in memory of late Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Shankaracharya Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati, SIES Trustee K A vishwanathan said in a release here today. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh each, besides a citation and a silver lamp.

Previous recipients included former Presidents Shankar Dayal Sharma and Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, former ISRO Chairmen Dr K Kasturirangan and Dr G Madhavan Nair, eminent musician late M S Subbalakshmi, eminent jurist Nani Palkiwala, Dr Virendra Heggade of Shreekshetra Dharmasthala and former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar.
