Senior BJP leader Lakhiram Agarwal passes away

Former Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh BJP president Lakhiram Agarwal passed away at Apollo Hospital here last night.

He was 78 and is survived by five sons and one daughter.

Agarwal was admitted to Apollo Hospital here on Friday evening in aserious condition. He was put on a ventilator. His son Amar Agrawal, who is Chhattisgarh Health and Commercial Tax Minister, has cancelled his programmes in view of his father's demise.

Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha Speaker Dharamlal Kaushik and other political leaders visited Apollo Hospital yesterday and condoled the death of Agarwal.

A two-time former Rajya Sabha MP, the veteran leader was ailing for the past few days. Earlier, he was admitted to Apollo Hospital here and later in Kolkata.

The veteran leader's last rites would be held at 1500 hrs at his ancestral village Kharchia in Raigarh district today.

Senior BJP leaders including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan are expected to attend the funeral, family sources said. Mr Chouhan expressed profound grief over the demise of Agrawal.

In his obituary, he said that in the united Madhya Pradesh and after formation of Chhattisgarh, the leader's outstanding services in social and political sectors would always remain memorable.

''In his death, we lost an organiser and a devotee of nationalist values,'' Mr Chouhan said and prayed to God to grant strength and solace to the bereaved family.
