TN CM inaugurates Indian Maritime University

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today inaugurated the Indian Maritime University and laid the foundation stone for the Administrative campus of the University at Uthandi in the city outskirts.
The University and the campus were being set up at a cost of Rs 245 crore. The project involved the setting up the headquarters of the University in Chennai and campuses in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Vishakapatnam. Maritime studies, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies including marine science and technology and marine environment will be promoted by the university.
The University was expected to offer solutions to the bottlenecks faced by training institutes and colleges in the maritime sector for university affiliation. The University would be on the patterns of the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmo, Switzerland.
Director of the National Maritime Academy (Chennai), P Vijayan has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the University. He has been appointed for a period of three years.
Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu and state Minsiters, Mr Vijayan and Mr A P V N Sarma, Secretary (Shipping) were among others who attended today's function.
