Kerala school youth festival begins Thiruvananthapuram | Tuesday, Dec 30 2008 IST
The Kerala school youth festival, claimed to be Asia's largest cultural event, got off to a colourful start here this evening with Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan lighting the traditional lamp. The week-long cultural extravaganza began with a welcome song penned by noted poet and lyricist O N V Kurup. Education Minister M A Baby and Law Minister M Vijayakumar were among those present. The festival will see over 7,600 contestants vying for honours in 216 disciplines which include 81 in high school section, 97 in higher secondary division and 19 in Arabic and Sanskrit literary festival. Earlier, a cultural procession was taken out in which thousands of students participated. The festival would be a real feast for art lovers as cream of talented boys and girls from 14 districts are perferming. -- (UNI) -- 30MS46.xml
