Mr K C Verma has been appointed as the Internal Security Advisor to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram. Mr Verma, an IPS officer of Jharkhand cadre of 1971 batch, is presently working as the Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat. He would act as advisor to the Home Minister in addition to his current responsibilities.
Internal Security Advisor to the Home Minister is a new post created in the changed security scenario after Mumbai terror attacks. Earlier, the National Security Advisor used to advise the government and the Prime Minister on various challenges to internal security.
However, after the Mumbai terror attacks, National Security Advisor Mr M K Narayanan has faced a lot of flak for inefficient handling of the security scenario.
Mr Chidambaram has also appointed Mr Rajeev Kumar Mital, IAS officer of 1998 batch of Maharashtra cadre, as the Private Secretary to the Home Minister.
Mr Safi Ahsan Rizvi, an IPS officer of 1989 cadre, has been appointed as Officer on Special Duty to the Home Minister.
