Union Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmad was today elected the new National President of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

Mr Ahmad, 73, succeeds Mr G M Banatwala who died recently. Mr Banatwala was the IUML President for a long period of time.

Mr Ahmad was unanimously elected at a meeting of the National Executive of the IUML after his name was proposed by IUML Kerala unit President Panakkad Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal, who holds immense clout in the party which has its largest following in Kerala.

The National Executive elected Prof Khader Mohideen, a Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu, as the General Secretary.

In keeping with the amendments made to the party's constitution recently, the National Executive also elected five secretaries for the first time.

The New Secretaries are Mr Naeem Akthar (Bihar), Mr Mohammed Ismail Banatwala (Maharashtra), the nephew of Mr G M Banatwala, Mr Shahim Shah Jahangir (West Bengal), Mr Abdu Samad Samadhani (Kerala) and Mr Khoram Omer (Delhi).

Mr Dhasthagheer Agha is the new Treasurer of the IUML.

IUML is a major partner of the Congress-led Opposition United Democratic Front in Kerala. IUML, which has two MPs in Parliament, is also a partner of the ruling UPA coalition at the Centre.
