Krishna Sobti chosen for Vyas Samman

Eminent Hindi writer Krishna Sobti has been chosen for the 2007 'Vyas Samman', the prestigious award for literature instituted by the K K Birla Foundation.

Ms Sobti has been given the honour for her novel 'Samay Sargam' which was published in 2000.

The novel illustrates the experiences of a bygone era on the one hand, and on the other highlights the problem that are associated with changing circumstances and life style.

The problems faced by senior citizens have also been dealt with very creatively and sensitively.

Born in 1925, Ms Sobti is an important figure among the generation of empowered writers that emerged after independence as a result of movement for education and awareness among women.

''Her unique style and her leaning towards exploring provocative questions through her writings carved a special identity for her.

She exhibited immense courage in moving away from traditions in her writing,'' a note from the Foundation said.

Prominent works of Ms Sobti include 'Mitron Marijaani, 'Surajmukhi' Andhere Ke, Yaaron Ke Yaar, Zindaginama, Yeh Ladki' and Mum Hashmat'.

Vyas Samman is given to an outstanding literary work in Hindi authored by an Indian citizen published during the last 10 years.

The selection for the Rs 2.50 lakh award, given annually, was made by a committee headed by eminent litterateur Prof Surya Prakash Dixit, head of the Hindi Department of Lucknow University, the KK Birla Foundation announced here today.
