Controversy in Asta Mutts
Udupi | Tuesday, Nov 27 2007 IST
Sri Sugunendra Thirtha swamiji of Udupi Sri Puthige Mutt today stressed the need for a written constitution applicable to all pontifs of Asta Mutts (eight mutts) of Udupi to solve the existing controvery and confusion among the asta mutts.
A section of the Madhwa community had raised strong objections aganst Sri Sugunendra Thirtha swamiji on the issue of ascending the 'Paryaya Peeta' on January 18 at Sri Krishna Mutt for breaking the unwritten traditional rule by crossing the sea to visit United States.
Speaking at a meeting convened at his mutt here after performing the final leg of pre-Paryaya preparatory ceremony of 'Dhanya Muhurtham'(storing of paddy and other food articles to feed visiting devotees during the two-year Paryaya period at Sri Krishna Mutt), the seer said such a written constitution had become the need of the hour for all pontiffs of Asta mutts going for reformation within the traditional framework to suit the present environment without damaging the basic principles of Madhwa tradition. In the absence of any laid down written constitution among the Asta mutts followed for more than 750 years, several controversy had risen, including vital issues like prohibiting an Asta mutt seer from ascending Paryaya Peeta, conducting Sri Krishna pooja for crossing the sea and observance of 'Ekadashi' on different dates (Thithi) by different mutts.
