Two hardcore Maoist militants were killed and two others were nabbed with arms and explosives following a gun battle in a forest in Bijapur district, the police said Wednesday.

In a major crack down against militants hiding in the forest in Haloor valley in Bhairamgarh block, a joint team of the para-military troops of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) assisted by Special Police Officers (SPOs)engaged a group of militants in a gun battle, gunning down two and capturing two.

"A gun battle broke out when a combing team challenged the militants in the forest. Two senior rebels were killed and two others were arrested with huge number of explosives," a senior police officer told IANS by phone from Bijapur.

Bijapur district superintendent of police Ratanlal Dangi led the operation against the militants.

Police officials said dozens of armed militants sustained injuries in the showdown and many were chased deep inside the forest.

Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, including Bijapur and Dantewada districts, has been hit by leftist related violence for more three decades.
