Activists of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student body affiliated to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), took to the streets here today after a Madhya Pradesh Congress leader portrayed Congress President Sonia Gandhi as Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, the legendary 19th century warrior queen.
Student activists were incensed after former Congress MP Kailash Sonekar published posters of Sonia Gandhi in which she was portrayed as Rani Lakshmi Bai.
The slogan-shouting protestors burnt an effigy of Sonekar and demanded the resignation of Sonia Gandhi.
ABVP leader Baba Srivastava said: "Depicting Sonia Gandhi as Rani Lakshmi Bai shows that Congress workers indulge in such activities to please Sonia Gandhi. Vidyarthi Parishad will not tolerate this".
However, Sonekar defended his action saying it only reflected the sacrifices made by Sonia Gandhi.
"I respect Sonia Gandhi. She has followed the same path of sacrifice as was followed by Rani of Jhansi. In my view and hundreds and thousands of Congress workers she is Rani of Jhansi. I am not comparing her to some great personality but her sacrifices speak for her," he said.
Reacting to Sonekar's comments, the BJP said the incident only highlighted the sycophancy among the Congress ranks.
"It is not unexpected, as the Congress has such tradition of pleasing, and its workers believe that they will not succeed unless they say such things for their leader," said BJP Spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad, in Delhi. (ANI)
