18 women barbers appointed breaking tradition Tirumala | September 25, 2006 11:54:49 AM IST
In a historic move, breaking the tradition, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) issued appointment letters to 18 women barbers at its hair tonsuring centre in the viscinity of the temple of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala. The women barbers, appointed on contract basis yesterday, will resume duty today, on the auspicious day of 'Bramotsavam', the tonsuring centre's Deputy Executive Officer, Bakthavachalu told UNI. However the appointment of women barbers comes in the face of stiff resistance from some sections on the ground that it was in violation of 'sastras'. The 18 women barbers were selected out of 20 after a practical test of hair tonsuring conducted on July 18 last. He said presently there are 660 men barbers, out of which 450 were being paid regular salary, while the remaining are on piece rate, he added. UNI KNR SRS VP0416
