An explosion on Wednesday rocked a provincial education office in the Afghan city of Jalalabad. At least one person was killed in the ensuing gunfire, an official said.

Unidentified gunmen attacked the institute in Nangarhar province at 9.30 a.m. and the clashes were ongoing, an official told Tolonews agency.

A number of gunmen stormed the building and opened fire on the security forces, a spokesman for Provincial Governor Attaullah Khoghyani said. He did not provide any further details.

Spokesman for the Nangarhar Education Department Asif Shinwari said one security guard was killed in clashes with gunmen.
