Gen Bipin Rawat known for operational skills and strategic expertise

Having served in tough terrains of Mizoram in 1979 during the peak of insurgency movement in the North Eastern state, Gen Bipin Rawat - Army chief designate - is known for his experience in high altitude warfare and counter-insurgency operations.

Appointed tonight , December 17 as new army chief, Lt Gen Rawat will take charge as the 27th chief of Indian Army from the present army chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag on December 31. "Government has decided to appoint Lt. Gen Bipin Rawat as next Chief of Army Staff -with effect from afternoon of Dec 31," an official tweet from the Defence ministry said.

Gen Rawat also commanded a brigade in counter-insurgency areas in United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo in 2008. Even as Gen Rawat's appointment comes superseding two senior officials,the top government sources say under the given circumstances and especially amid growing tension with Pakistan, Lt Gen Rawat would be 'best suitable' for the top job among the senior Lt Generals.

At present the vice chief of army staff, Lt Gen Rawat also served GoC Southern Command. He also served in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa Area.

An alumni of St Edward's School, Shimla, Rawat was commissioned in the Fifth Battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles from Indian Military Academy Dehradun. He also commanded an Infantry Division in the Kashmir Valley.

Son of Lt. Gen. L S Rawat, he was born in a Gadhwali Rajput family serving army since generations.Commanding a Multinational Brigade in a Chapter VII mission for the UN in the Democratic Republic of Congo Rawat, then a Brigadier, carried out tactical support to the Congolese Army (FARDC), sensitization programmes with the local population and detailed coordination.His operational skills were appreciated even internationally.

An highly decorated official, Gen Rawat has to his credit gallantry award AVSM. knownfor being academically inclined, he also authored numerous articles on 'National Security'.

Lt Gen Bipin Rawat has also completed his research on military media strategic studies and was awarded Doctorate of Philosophy from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut in 2011. UNI DEVN CJ 2310
