Disclosing this at a one-day seminar on Housing For All, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here, he said the housing shortage in the country was estimated at 24.7 million at the end of the Xth Five Year Plan. Given the magnitude of the housing shortage and budgetary constraints of both Central and State governments, it is imperative that the real estate sector is encouraged fully to play its due role in helping us achieve our goal of providing housing for all, he said. Stating the government of Andhra Pradesh has taken various initiatives under the PPP model in the housing sector, Mr Reddy said the government has devised a model integrated townships plan and is in the process of allotting 100 acre in each of the municipal corporations, 50 acre in each of the municipalities, and 10 acres in each mandal. These townships would help in addressing the housing shortage in the State to some extent. In addition, the State government alone is constructing 26,000 flats in and around Hyderabad and 50,000 flats across the State under its own Rajiv Swagruha Scheme, said the Minister. Mr Ratna Kumar, Additional Secretary, Housing Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh, said there is an acute shortage of housing for below-poverty line (BPL) people in the country. In view of this, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has taken up a massive housing scheme under Indiramma Programme.

Yeddyurappa should rectify his mistakes: Kodagu MLA

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa should rectify his mistakes and run the government smoothly, said local MLA Appachu Ranjan. TN

Even though the torrential North East monsoon rains continued to batter several parts of Tamil Nadu for the fifth consecutive day today, it brought cheers to farming community, as major reservoirs, tanks and other bodies are fast filling up in southern districts of the state. The quantum of rain in Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts has come down sharply this morning, bringing relief to the people. Official sources said Periyar reservoir recorded 19 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. The level of the dam stood at 121.20 feet, as against full capacity of 136 feet this morning, with an inflow of 4345 cusecs. The discharge was 1200 cusecs. Similarly, the water level in Vaigai dam stood at 58.99 feet, this morning against its full capacity of 71 feet. The inflow was 1706 cusecs and the discharge was 1660 cusecs. The rains have not wraught much havoc to the crops in southern districts, as preliminary works for plantation of various crops have just begun. In Tirunelveli, where heavy rains continue to lash, the Tamiraparani river was in spate. The district administration has advised the people residing on the banks of the river to move to safer places and has geared up its official machinery to meet out any eventuality. In Ramanathapuram district, about 150 houses for the tsunami-affected fishermen in Chinnapalam and Therkuvadi coastal hamlets have started leaking, owing to heavy rains.

Rains helps to improve storage level in reservoirs

The incessant rains during the current spell of north-east monsoon has helped to improve the storage level in four reservoirs on the outskirts of the city, which cater to the drinking water needs of the city.

Puducherry Excise dept imoses fine on 5 IMFL bars

Puducherry Excise Department today imposed a fine of Rs10,000 each on five IMFL bars, which failed to adhere to the timings stipulated by the department.

Delegates from Pakistan to attend IIM-K workshop

About 30 delegates from Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Pakistan and various parts of the country would participate in an international workshop on Greenstone Digial Libraries beginning here on November 23.

Mob pelts stones at police in UP district; tension hits

Tension prevailed after the locals pelted stones at police force, following raids at the illicit kilns involved in burning animals fat in Kotwali area of this Uttar Pradesh district today.

VHP, Bajrang Dal to mark Dec 6 as Shaurya Diwas

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal today said they would observe the 17th anniversary of the disputed structure demolition in Ayodhya on December 6 as Shaurya Diwas (Martyrs Day).

Man tests positive for H1N1 in HP

One more person tested positive for Influenza A(H1N1), taking the total number of people affected by the pandemic to 11 in Himachal Pradesh.

Rajasthan bypolls: 25-28 pc voting till noon

An estimated 25 to 28 per cent of the total 4.1 lakh electorate cast their votes in by-elections to Todabhim(ST) and Salumbar(ST) Assembly seats in Rajasthan till 1300 hrs today.

Minor raped on HP

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by one Kulwant in Bari village, Nirmand Tehsil of this district. Polling has been peaceful so far and security arrangement has been tight across the constituencies to thwart any untoward incidents. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been used for the by-election in all the polling centres. The by-election was necessitated following the election of the sitting MLAs to the Lok Sabha. In Dhekiajuli, the contest is between AGP candidate Shiba Charan Sahu and Congresss Bhimananda Tanti, while CPI(M)s Gunadhar Sundi and AIUDFs Lenin Basumatary could play the spoilers. The contest in south Salmara is expected to be between AIUDFs Abdur Rahman Ajmal and Congresss Wajed Ali Choudhury. While Dhekiajuli was AGPs domain, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had held south Salmara in the last Assembly election.

Top ULFA leaders in Assam Police custody: Gogoi

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today confirmed that two of the top leaders of the ULFA, who were handed over by Bangladesh yesterday to Indian security agencies, were in the custody of Assam Police.

Howrah gets Rs 61 crore multi-speciality hospital

Howrah is all set to get its first multi-speciality hospital having treatments like radio-therapy with Linear Accelerator, invasive cardiology along with cardio-thoracic surgery and other modern facilties by mid-2011 as the Westbank Group will establish their second venture in the district at a cost of Rs 61 crore.

Veteran CPI leader dead

Veteran CPI leader Rajendra Singh died after prolonged illness at his native village Laulagam in Madhepura district late last night.

10 injured as police lathicharge mob

Ten people, including three policemen, were injured today when a clash erupted between the security personnel and an unruly mob at Akhara Muhalla here.
