Medvedev calls for Russia to become superpower
Moscow | Thursday, Nov 12 2009 IST

President Dmitry Medvedev today called for Russia to become a superpower on new grounds.

In his annual state-of-the-nation address at the joint session of parliament in the Kremlin, Mr Medvedev said he was firmly convinced that Russia could get the superpower status on a principally new basis.

He said his vision of Russia's future was based on ''firm conviction in the necessity and possibility of Russia acquiring global superpower status on a principally new basis.'' He said Russia's national welfare and its role in the international arena should no longer be determined by the Soviet-era achievements.

''Oil and gas industry complexes, which provide the lion's share of Budget income, nuclear weapons that guarantee our security, industrial and housing facilities - this all was made mostly by Soviet specialists,'' Mr Medvedev said, adding the Soviet-era heritage was rapidly becoming outdated.

''Though it keeps our country afloat, it is rapidly becoming outdated,'' he said.

Mr Medvedev also called for the supply of the most modern weapons to the Russian Army next year.

''Next year, we need to supply to the Army over 30 ground-based and sea-based ballistic missiles, five Iskander missile systems, some 300 armoured vehicles, 30 helicopters, 28 combat planes, three nuclear submarines, and one Korvet combat ship,'' he said.

Mr Medvedev said these measures will help create an Army that ''will rule out any chance of a threat to us and our allies.''
