Don't change travel plans: British security expert London | August 11, 2006 5:15:05 PM IST
A day after Britain's anti-terror officials said they had foiled a major plot, a security expert stressed that flying was still the safest form of travel and urged people not to change their travel plans - for that would amount to victory for terrorists. Simon Bennett, head of the Civil Safety and Security Unit (CSSU) at the University of Leicester, said: "In order to thwart terrorism, we need the public's help. So be vigilant. If you recall seeing, or notice anything suspicious, inform the police or any airline or airport employee immediately. All of us who work in the industry are trained in security. "We also urge people not to change travel plans. Flying is the safest form of travel. If you do change your plans, the terrorists win." Bennett praised the security services for their action to foil the suspected plot and said: "Vigilance has not relaxed since 9/11. This is the reason why the plot has been uncovered. MI5's resources have been increased. "The issue here is that the public's memory is short, and it forgets that this country is involved in a 'long war'. The public's 'memory loss' is unsurprising as the work of the security services and police goes on unseen. Surveillance is covert". (IANS)
