Paes-Dlouhy go down in first group match of ATP World tour
London | Tuesday, Nov 24 2009 IST

Leander Paes and his Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy suffered a straight-sets defeat in their opening Group B match of the ATP World Tour Finals' doubles event here.

The fourth seeded Indo-Czech pair were sent packing by debutants Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach 3-6, 6-7(3) as the French and US Open champions failed to overcome their Polish-Austrian rivals yesterday.

The defeat has made the road to the knock-out stage more difficult for Paes and Dlouhy who will next face second seeds Bob and Mike Bryan of the Unites States.

The Indo-Czech pair tried hard against their more inexperienced opponents and there were a number of body blows exchanged between the two teams.

Paes was also at the receving end when a ball was smashed to his throat during the 92-minute battle.

The Polish-Austrian combine did well to save five of the six breakpoints and converted two of the four that came their way to register a resounding victory.

It wasn't the pair of Paes and Dlouhy only who were handed a shock defeat but pre-tournament favourites the Bryan twins were also at the losing end as they went down 4-6, 4-6 to seventh seeds Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram.

The results mean that at least one if not both of these two veteran teams may be heading home at the end of the round-robin stage of the competition.
