India, US to sign Counter-Terrorism Initiative
Geneva | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

India and the United States will sign a Counter-Terrorism Initiative to strengthen cooperation against global terror during the four-day state visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Washington beginning tomorrow.

Official sources said here today that as per the Initiative, the US will give sophisticated equipment which will enable Indian security agencies to pinpoint the exact location of a cellphone being used by terrorists.

''It (location of mobile phone) has always been a problem in counter-terrorism operations,'' the sources said.

The sources said the US is also likely to disclose the name of a senior Pakistani official who was involved in 26/11 attacks besides David Coleman Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana.

However, the sources did not disclose the name but merely said he was a Pakistani.

Terrorists, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, have been randomly using cellphones in terrorist operations and their location has become difficult to track for the security agencies.

The government recently banned use of pre-paid mobile phones in Jammu and Kashmir, citing security reasons.

The sources said National Security Advisor (NSA) M K Narayanan had a meeting with CIA Chief Leon Baneta in New Delhi this morning, during which terrorism and situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan were discussed.
