Russia may back further sanctions against Iran : Medvedev
Moscow | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

President Dmitry Medvedev has said Russia may back further sanctions against Iran if no progress is made on its nuclear issue.

"I would not like everything to end with the use of international sanctions, because sanctions, as a general rule, are a step in a very tricky and dangerous direction," Medvedev said in an interview to German Der Spiegel magazine.

"However, if there is no movement forward, such a scenario cannot be excluded," he added.

He said if agreement was reached on programmes related to the enrichment of Iranian uranium, Russia "would gladly participate in such programmes." "If agreements are reached on programmes of uranium enrichment and its subsequent peaceful use in Iran, we will then gladly take part in such programmes," Medvedev said.

"But if the Iranian leadership takes a less constructive position, hypothetically anything is possible then," he said, pointing out "We spoke about this in New York during our meeting with President Obama." Asked whether Russia plans to supply arms to Iran, Medvedev gave an evasive answer.

"Our national policy and my decisions are based on assumption that we will supply only those types of weapons that have a pronounced defensive nature. We will not deliver any offensive weapons," he said.
