Zardari, Sharif meeting ends without major breakthrough
Islamabad | October 27, 2009 11:46:43 AM IST

A much-awaited meeting between Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif concluded without any major breakthrough on Monday. Both parties said it was "positive, productive and good for the democratic process".

While addressing a press conference, PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq had said that both parties had discussed the security situation across the country and also agreed that terrorism must be eliminated.

According to reports, Zardari had also agreed to the PML-N demand for the repeal of the 17th Amendment and the implementation of the Charter of Democracy (CoD) as soon as possible.

"The two sides reiterated their commitment to uphold democratic principles as laid down in the CoD," The Daily Times quoted statement by the Presidency, as saying.

While, the PML-N assured Zardari that it would not destabilise the Government, it warned that the PPP's "poor governance" could derail country's the democratic system.

Earlier, before the talks Sharif had said that a positive outcome can only emerge if the government abolishes the controversial 17th constitutional amendment, as agreed under the Charter of Democracy (CoD). (ANI)
