Parek government announces Deepawali gift for Malay-Indians
Kuala Lumpur | October 16, 2009 2:40:37 PM IST

The government of the Malaysian state of Perek has announced the allocation of 800 hectares of land to raise money for an Indian education fund as a Deepawali gift to Malay-Indians.

Mentri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the earnings from the land would be channelled into the Tabung Pendidikan dan Pengupayaan Pendidikan Kaum India funds.

"I hope this will come as good news for the Indians who will be celebrating Deepavali tomorrow. This is the state government's commitment to ensure that all races facing problems related to education are given aid," the Star Online quoted Kadir, as saying.

Addressing a press conference at the 2009 Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kadir said the state government had also allocated 2,000 hectare for the benefit of more than 700 Islamic religious schools and 1,000ha to aid private Chinese schools.

He added that the state government would intensify efforts to resolve the people's problems in the 2010 Budget to be tabled in the Perak state assembly on October 28. (ANI)
