German museum to return Aboriginal skulls Berlin | November 15, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
A Berlin museum said it plans to return the skulls of 18 Aboriginal Australians to their country after more than 100 years in Germany. Officials with the museum, which is part of the Charite hospital and medical school, said they plan to work with Australian scientists to decide the best destination for the skulls, Deutsche Welle reported Friday. The Australian ambassador to Germany, Ian Kemish, said the return of the skulls is the result of an impulse for reconciliation. We welcome the initiative for an appropriate return and contribution to a respectful reconciliation with Australia, said Charite hospital chairman Karl Max Einhaeupl. Museum officials said it is not clear how the skulls ended up in the facility's anthropology collection. (UPI)
