Bird flu detected in Bangladeshi girl
Dhaka | Thursday, May 22 2008 IST

Bangladesh today announced the first case of bird flu virus H5N1 in humans.

A Health Ministry release said a girl aged 16 months was attacked by the virus here last January. She developed respiratory problems but got cured through normal treatment.

However, doctors suspected the case and her blood sample was sent to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta, US. The CDC yesterday reported to the Bangladesh government that it was a confirmed case of H5N1.

As per WHO rules, the Bangladesh government announced the detection of the virus in human body within 24 hours of medical findings.
