Claim: Canada health group faced cutbacks St. John's, Newfoundland | May 10, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
A health authority in the Canadian province of Newfoundland faced significant budget cuts while dealing with a cancer testing crisis, a former executive said. George Tilley, a former Eastern Health chief executive, told a judicial inquiry this week that while the health group was trying to deal with breast cancer testing problems, it was ordered to cut millions of dollars from its budget, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday. The former health official told Justice Margaret Cameron Friday how Eastern Health faced reorganization and budget constraints while attempting to determine how the cancer testing went wrong in 2005. Six months into the role, I still hadn't seen a way to achieve the original targets that were set upon me, Tilley said. Tilley also alleged he informed government officials about his concerns regarding the health probe and the related government expectations, but no action was taken. The judicial review is looking into any wrongdoing in relation to the 2005 health crisis, the CBC said. (UPI)
