Cuban prisoners have sentences commuted Havana | May 09, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
Cuban President Raul Castro says almost all of the communist island's prisoners sentenced to death would have their sentences commuted. Many death row prisoners now face life or 30-year sentences, Granma newspaper reported Tuesday. The commuting of sentences is the latest reform by the Castro government. Castro also said this week he would increase state pensions by 20 percent and increase salaries for court employees, Granma newspaper reported Monday. The Cuban leader, who this year replaced his older brother Fidel Castro as Cuban president, has made a number of reform proposals in recent weeks -- including opening up the country's agricultural sector and allowing Cubans to own cell phones and computers.
