DNC ad 'twists' McCain's words, group says
Washington | May 09, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST

A self-described non-partisan campaign transparency Web site, FactCheck.org, said a Democratic ad targeting Sen. John McCain's stance on Iraq is inaccurate.

An ad paid for by the Democratic National Committee, or DNC, shows presumptive GOP presidential nominee and Arizona Sen. McCain alongside images of explosions and violence in Iraq.

The ad narration says, President Bush has talked about our staying in Iraq for 50 years at which point it splices in a comment by McCain saying maybe a hundred. That'd be fine with me. A video showing U.S. soldiers hit by a bomb and several violent images from Iraq follows that narration.

FactCheck.org says the ad twists the sense of the McCain message, USA today said Wednesday.

Following criticism filed by the Republican National Committee, FactCheck.org says the text of the ad paired with images of Iraq under siege leave a clear impression that McCain proposes to allow a century more of war, with U.S. involvement. That's not what he said, a statement read. The ad twists the sense of McCain's words by showing images of war, when he was really talking about a peaceful troop presence, it continues.

DNC Chairman Howard Dean says the ad uses McCain's word to paint him as a status quo candidate.
