New Orleans still beckons Katrina evacuees Baton Rouge, La. | May 09, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
A large number of displaced New Orleans residents say they are still considering a return to the Crescent City more than two years after Hurricane Katrina. A large crowd of Katrina victims attended a session in Baton Rouge, La., Tuesday night to air their concerns and views to New Orleans City Council President Arnie Fieklow and Recovery Director Ed Blakely. The New Orleans Times-Picayune said most former residents are unsure if the city can support them or if they can afford to rebuild. Others also said they were getting comfortable in their new homes and figured their old neighborhoods would never be the same. I'm torn between going back, and staying here, said former resident Charles Breaux. Fieklow and Blakely said New Orleans was getting back on its feet. Fieklow said a new master plan for public schools would soon be released (UPI)
