Driver speeding to hospital taken to court Dorchester, England | May 09, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
A British man said it cost him more than $600 in legal fees to challenge a speeding ticket he incurred while driving his pregnant wife to the hospital. Martin Walton, 36, said he saw the flash of the traffic camera while he was driving 37 mph in a 30 mph zone to get his wife, who was in labor, to the Poole Hospital Maternity Unit in the county of Dorset, The Telegraph reported Wednesday. Walton said he met with a clerk of the court to explain the situation, but was told the case could not be dropped. He said he decided to take the case to court, where the judge ruled that due to Walton's special circumstances, the offense would be dropped from his record and no penalty points would be added to his license. However, Walton said he does not believe the case should have gone as far as it did. My wife had to come and give evidence, I spent over 300 pounds ($600) on a solicitor and had two days off work, he said. There ought to be room for discretion. The courts had the details from the beginning, but they seemed not to have read the evidence. (UPI)
