Sunflower oil scare enters second week Kiev, Ukraine | May 09, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
The European Commission, facing the second week of a scare about sunflower oil from Ukraine, said tons of oil had been deliberately tainted. Spain initially raised concern about the oil tainted with mineral oil several days ago, and the European Commission since has taken up the cause, EuroNews.net reported. The EC said 40,000 tons of the oil was purposely contaminated but the commission was reluctant to identify which brands are affected, the report said. This a fraud that has been committed, a commission representative said. Some mineral oil has illegally found its way into this (sunflower) oil. ... Any oil that contains those traces of mineral oil will be removed from the market and that already is happening. Shiploads of the oil arrived in France from Ukraine, EuroNews.net said. Once in France, it was shipped to five other EU countries, including England, Italy and the Netherlands. (UPI)
