BASE jumper lands in hands of cops Sydney | May 09, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
Two men staged a successful -- if illegal -- parachute jump off an Australian apartment tower early Wednesday, with one landing in front of a police car. The jumpers were both arrested, The Daily Telegraph of Sydney reported. The men were engaged in the sport of BASE jumping, leaping from a fixed object like a cliff or building using a parachute. They made their leap about 3 a.m. in downtown Sydney. Both face charges of endangering the safety of others by jumping from a building. If convicted, they could be fined up to about $944. Police Inspector Brenton Lee said that the two men appeared to have jumped purely for the fun of it. They were not doing this as any sort of protest, Lee told The Daily Telegraph. These guys just do it for themselves. He said police are trying to determine how the pair got into the apartment complex to carry out the jump. (UPI)
