Jailhouse informants won't testify Miami | May 09, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
U.S. prosecutors in Miami say they have decided against using testimony from jailhouse snitches who claimed a suspect admitted killing a charter boat crew. Lawyers for Guillermo Zarabozo had moved to suppress the informants' testimony, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. A hearing was scheduled for Wednesday on the motion. Zarabozo of Hialeah, Fla., and Kirby Archer of Strawberry, Ark., allegedly paid $4,000 to charter the Joe Cool, a 47-foot fishing boat, saying they wanted to go to Bimini in the Bahamas. Prosecutors contend that they killed the captain, Jake Branam, his wife and two crew members because Branam resisted their demand to be taken to Cuba. Archer, a fugitive from Arkansas, where he allegedly embezzled $92,000 from a Wal-Mart, and Zarabozo were found on a life raft about 12 miles from the Joe Cool. The boat was empty. In court records, one informant was said to have quoted Zarabozo saying that Archer killed the Branams and the other men. The other informant said he had overheard the conversation. Prosecutors said that one reason for not using the testimony is that it would have meant separate trials for the two defendants. (UPI)
