Five dead in Sydney boat collision

Five people were killed early Thursday when two boats, one of them possibly stolen, collided in Sydney Harbor, authorities said. All the deaths occurred on a boat belonging to Sydney Ship Repair and Engineering, The Daily Telegraph reported. The company's general manager, Col McPherson, said the boat, generally used to ferry employees to the company's yard on Goat Island, was missing from its berth at 6 a.m. His employees were all accounted for and none would have been working at 2:40 a.m. when the crash occurred, McPherson said. The workboat collided with a fishing trawler. Investigators said 14 people, all between the ages of 18 and 31, were on board the smaller boat. The dead were described as a man and four women, all in their late teens or early 20s. At least nine people were seriously injured, with one reported to be in critical condition. The fishing boat picked up survivors and bodies. (UPI)
