Poll: Giuliani keeps GOP lead

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani continued to show strength among conservatives and evangelical Christians interviewed for a new CBS poll. The former New York mayor leads the GOP presidential field among groups not initially expected to be favorable toward him, CBS reported Tuesday. Of those polled, Giuliani garnered 38 percent of Republican primary voters, a slight increase from a CBS poll last month. Actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., who has yet to announce officially that he is running for president, was favored by 18 percent of those polled, a 7-point drop from last month's CBS poll. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 13 percent, a 5-point increase over last month, while Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., received 12 percent. A random sampling of 1,214 adults nationwide were interviewed by telephone Aug. 8-12 for the poll, which has a 3 percentage-point margin of error. (UPI)
