Canadian PM: Quebec is a nation Ottawa | November 23, 2006 12:01:13 AM IST
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has dropped a political bombshell by declaring Quebec is a nation within the nation of Canada. The unexpected statement in the House of Commons Wednesday saw opposition Liberals and New Democrats rise to their feet to applaud the Conservative leader, the Globe & Mail reported Thursday. In introducing the motion, Harper caught the separatist Bloc Quebecois party off guard. Our position is clear. Do the Quebecois form a nation within Canada? The answer is yes. Do the Quebecois form an independent nation? The answer is no, Harper said. Debate on the bill is likely to begin next Monday, and by Thursday morning the majority of Liberals said they would support it. Thursday, the Bloc Quebecois offered its own version of the same bill with a modification to the language to says Quebec forms a nation that is currently inside Canada, the newspaper reported. (UPI)
